EcoDesign 2017

International invitational EcoDesign exhibition presents sustainable design. This year theme was to design an decorational object or furniture which can be self-assembled. The designs had to be made from certified wood and recyclable materials. The exhibition introduced 35 objects ready for production from both Finnish and foregin designers. The prize of 3000 euros donated by the Finnish Fair Foundation was shared between two designers. The jury which consisted of designers Tapio Anttila and Hannu Kähönen, sustainable developement expert Riitta Lempiäinen and the producer of the EcoDesign exhibition Jari Pirhonen decided one sidedly to give 2000 euros for Aleksi Peltonen and his steplessly adjustable bookcase CLAMP. The jury agreed that the work fulfilled the ecological requirements, works well, is easy to build, excellently finished and aestethically well thought choice. 1000 euros was given to SLEEPS a fully wooden bed frame. The jury thought the solution was insightful design. The bed is easy to build without any tools and is made completely out of wood. As a whole it is an aesthetically successfull production ready product. Tomi Laukkanen’s SLEEPS bed also received a prize of 1000 euros worth of PEFC certified wood from PEFC Finland and Fiskarsin Laatupuu for ”insightful use of wood”.

In addition two honorable mentions were given to Kaarle Holmberg and his FESTARI table and chair set, and Milja Partanen’s POLKU product family.

The Jury noted that Holmbergs work is an excellent example of a well thought three piece furniture, which saves storage and shelf space when packaged. It also is made from easy to recycle materials.

Milja Partanen’s POLKU product family is a furniture concept designed for compact spaces and is an excellent example of adaptability and minimlistic use of raw materials. There will be need and demand for a product like this. All the works shown in the exhibition were well finished and according to the jury well executed.
